The White Mountains are a different range from the Green Mountains you're driving on to. Vermont is worn-down, ice-scraped Appalachian rock, rounded and forested to the summit. New Hampshire's Whites are younger and harder granite, cut through by deep glacial notches — Franconia Notch, Crawford Notch, Pinkham Notch — and they top out much higher: Mount Washington is 6,288 ft, the highest peak in the northeastern US, against Vermont's 4,393 ft.
What the region is actually famous for is two specific drives, not a single view: the Kancamagus Highway ("the Kanc"), a 34.5-mile National Scenic Byway through the national forest with almost no commercial development, and Franconia Notch, a narrow pass with Flume Gorge (a granite gorge walk) at its south end.
The plan has to change because of a real closure, not a preference. Cannon Mountain's Aerial Tramway — the no-hike way up for a summit view — retired its 45-year-old tram on October 26, 2025, and New Hampshire is building a third-generation replacement. The earliest realistic reopening is the 2028–29 season. This page substitutes Artist's Bluff & Bald Mountain, a short trail at the same trailhead that looks across at Cannon Mountain instead of riding up it.

Earlier than the 7:30–8:00 start used on the Vermont days, because this is the longest single driving day of the whole trip. Fill up before leaving; Ontario fuel is cheaper than what you'll find once you're deep into the route.

Lincoln sits at the west end of the Kancamagus, minutes from Franconia Notch — the reason it's the base for tomorrow rather than North Conway. No lodging is booked yet.
Unlike the rest of the trip, this one dinner is likely eaten out rather than cooked — whether the Lincoln lodging has a kitchen isn't confirmed yet. Early night: tomorrow's first stop needs an 8:00 start.
Artist's Bluff · Flume Gorge · Kancamagus Highway to Sabbaday Falls · I-93 to Hyde Park — 160 mi, ~3 h driving
Artist's Bluff first — it has no gate and no fee, so there's no reason to wait for Flume Gorge to open at 9:00.
A short, steep loop to a rocky ledge over Echo Lake, with Cannon Mountain rising straight across the notch — the closest thing to the tramway's payoff without the tramway. Free, no timed entry, dirt lot right on Route 18 across from the Cannon Mountain base area.
Cannon Mountain's Aerial Tramway retired its second-generation tram on October 26, 2025, after 45 years of service. New Hampshire is building a third-generation system, targeted for the 2028–29 season at the earliest — a $27.2M project, bids due mid-2026. It will not be running for this trip. Artist's Bluff is the nearest substitute view and needs no ticket.
A boardwalk loop through a granite gorge with an 800-foot-long chasm, plus a covered bridge and Avalanche Falls — about two miles of easy, flat walking, family-friendly. Opens 9:00 AM through October 12 (9–5), so this is right after the gates open.
Tickets are $3 cheaper per person bought online in advance, and it likely means less time in a ticket-window line. Hours are weather-dependent and can change without notice — call 603-745-8391 to confirm on the day if it matters.
The high point of the Kancamagus, just beyond Kancamagus Pass, with a wide view over the Swift River watershed and the mountains to the north and east. A paved pull-off with interpretive signage — no hiking needed, and a good stretch after the drive up from Lincoln.
A tiered waterfall reached by a genuinely short, easy walk with a mini loop of wooden rails above the falls — one of the most popular stops on the Kanc for a reason. Packed lunch at the picnic area either before or after the walk.
Rocky Gorge Scenic Area is closer to Lincoln than Sabbaday Falls and has its own short paved walkway to a footbridge over the Swift River, plus a pond loop if anyone wants to stretch further. Similar $3 fee. Map · AllTrails. Swimming in the gorge itself is prohibited and enforced.
Retrace the Kancamagus west to Lincoln, where it meets I-93.

Fall-foliage weekend traffic near Lincoln and Franconia Notch on I-93 can be heavy, though this is a Thursday. Not routed with live traffic — treat 4:30 as the honest target, not a guarantee, and build slack by trimming the overlook stop or swapping Sabbaday Falls for the closer Rocky Gorge if the morning runs long.
